Hello 3rd Graders! Today's Learning Target is...
I can solve the upper face of a Rubik’s Cube to
match a pattern to form a mosaic.
I can make sense of problems and persevere
when solving them.

What Is A Mosaic?
A mosaic is a form of artwork that uses small pieces put together to create a larger picture. Traditional mosaics are made from tiles or small pieces of glass, but we will be using the 6 colors of the Rubik's Cube to create mosaic art.
Thinking In Pixels
When it comes to pixels- the bigger, the better. If you look very closely at a photograph, or a TV, or a computer screen, you will see tiny squares, called pixels. The clarity of the screen depends on how many pixels are in the square inch of the screen. A high definition TV has more pixels in a square inch than a standard definition TV does. Each face on a Rubik's Cube has 9 squares that could be used like pixels to create a picture. The more Rubik's Cubes we use, the more detail we will be able to achieve. Since the Rubik's cube is a set size, we can get more clarity and detail by using more cubes. Look at the 2 cube versions of Einstein. Which mosaic has more detail? Why?
600 Rubik's Cubes, 5, 400 pixels, 140 Third Grade Students= 1 Giant Mosaic
On April 12th, the Westbury School District will host a Community Cafe celebrating how technology is changing the world through the innovative minds of people and students just like you. We will do our part by creating a giant mosaic art display made out of 600 Rubik's Cubes. Each 3rd grade student will be responsible for helping to create this innovative masterpiece. Over the next 3 weeks we will use our algorithmic skills to solve the upper face of each Rubik's Cube to match a pattern in our design. Persistence and Perseverance will be the keys to our success. We will have Growth Mindset and NEVER give up!
