Hello 5th Grade Engineers and Innovators!
Our next big project begins today. We will use Design Thinking to work collaboratively to solve a real-life social problems.
Our Learning Targets are:
(Innovative Designer 4.b.)
I can complete the steps of Design Thinking within a project.
I can empathize, define, and ideate solutions for a problem.
I can digital tools to annotate pdf files and take notes.

Over the next few weeks, we will become designers and inventors in a project that has been completed by students all over the world. You will be challenged to invent things to help others.
3D Printing in Space
We will be using 3D modeling software to do this. Did you know that 3D printers are right now being used out in space?
Our next project is called the City X Project. A little while ago, a group of people volunteered to become pioneers and create the first colony in space. They landed and began to build a new city. They called this city, City X. As time went on they noticed that they were many things that they forgot to bring with them and many supplies were lost or broken. They began to notice that they were many problems. They need HELP! The Mayor of City X sent this transmission to Earth:
There are 40 citizens in City X who have sent requests for help to the designers back on Earth. Each of you will be assigned a citizen to help and, over the course of the next few classes, you will will use the Design Thinking Process to create inventions to solve the Citizens’ problems.
It’s up to us to solve our citizen’s problem with the two tools at our disposal: a 3D printer and our imaginations. |
What is Design Thinking?
We will use Design Thinking to solve our citizens problems.
Stage 1: Empathize
Carefully read your citizen's problem. Try to understand the problem that your citizen is facing. Put yourself in their shoes. Try to understand their thoughts, feelings, and physical needs. In order to make a great invention, you have to start by understanding the person you are trying to help. |
Stage 3: Ideate
Begin to think about how you could solve your citizens problem. Brainstorm multiple ideas by listing and sketching.here are some City X Guidelines:
