Essential Question:
How can we use design thinking to innovate a video game?
How can we use design thinking to innovate a video game?
Video Game Designers Wanted
An independent video game company has hired our video game studio to create a new and exciting game. This game will be designed strictly for mobile devices and will be a (visually) linear game, such as the original hits: Donkey Kong, Super Mario Brothers, and Sonic the Hedgehog.
Your team will be creating the story, characters, visuals, and levels that make video games fun and exciting. The areas your team will be focusing on are the same ones that make developers and companies spend millions of dollars creating and designing.

Design Thinking
Step 4: Prototype
For today's task your team will build, capture, and configure the layouts and background for your video game.
Capturing the Gameboard
Time To Test! Once you have captured your board, you should be able to press play and immediately start play-testing your layout. How does it work? Want to change something? Go back to the Builder and make your edits.
Configure Your Layout
Now that you have created a game layout, we can begin to configure some of the objects in the game.
Tap on the pink block to select a power-up. These give the Hero special powers, including the ability to change the Hero with the Character Swap Power-up. With this Power-up, the Hero can change to any other character you select from your library. This can mean small changes, such as the same Hero but now wearing sunglasses, to bigger transformations.

One of the most important blocks to configure is the white Storyblock. When you have white selected, you can choose a block to add text to it, which will appear for your players in the game. You can also choose its behavior- if it’s just text, if it’s a checkpoint (the player restarts here when they run out of health) or if it’s an end flag (ending the game.)
The last block you will configure will be the purple enemy block. You will decide if your enemy will be a walking or flying enemy. Time To Test! Make sure that your storyblocks, enemies, and power-ups work correctly.
Adding A Background
You can design your own background in Bloxels Edu, but to save time your team will choose one from our shared Backgrounds Class Library.
Our video games are half way done.Next week we will add heroes, enemies, collectibles, and power-ups to our game and learn how to animate them.
Have fun with this, and I can’t wait to see what you have created!
