Hello 5th Grade Engineers and Innovators!
Our next big project begins today. We will use Design Thinking to solve real-life social problems.
Our Learning Targets are:
(Innovative Designer 4.b.)
I can define and complete the steps of Design Thinking within a project.
I can ideate and create a prototype for the solution to a problem.
I can create a 3D model of my design using clay.

Last week we began our 3D modeling project, called the City X Project. We used the Design Thinking Process to empathize with a citizen who had a social problem from a planet in Space. We then defined the problem and began to ideate a list of possible solutions. |
3D Printing in Space
Meet James. His City X Project invention was 3D printed onboard the International Space Station in early 2015. James' model is one of the first civilian-designed objects ever manufactured off of planet Earth.

James created an invention for Miguel, who is facing a health issue in City X. James invented the Health Coaster (schematic below!), an all-in-one healthcare solution for not just Miguel, but all of the citizens of City X.
Using the design process, James made his model stand out because he didn’t just think about physically healing Miguel. He enhanced his invention to take care of other important parts of health too, such as hunger (an M&M® dispenser!), relaxation (a foot massager!), and fun (it rides on a rollercoaster track!).

Your Turn !
Today you will continue to ideate solutions to your citizen's problem, seek peer advice, and then choose an idea that you would like to make into a 3D prototype using modeling clay.
What is Design Thinking?
We will use Design Thinking to solve our citizens problems.
Stage 3: Ideate
Begin to think about how you could solve your citizens problem. Brainstorm multiple ideas by listing and sketching.here are some City X Guidelines:

Stage 3: Prototype
A prototype is a model of one of your ideas. Prototypes give you the opportunity to test your ideas and improve on them, to make sure you have the best invention possible. prototypes aren't meant to be perfect. They are quick mini models. You will only have 8 minutes to create your prototype out of clay. |
