Did You Ever Want To Hold A Hologram In Your Hand?
|
The Merge Cube uses Augmented Reality to create holograms that you can hold in your hand. Augmented Reality is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world (think Pokemon Go). Augment means to add. The things that are added to the real world can be text, pictures, photos, video, and 3d animations.

The Merge Cube, described by it’s developer as “The hologram you hold in your hand,” is a foam cube with different designs on each side. When it's held in front of your device’s camera the cube is transformed into digital 3D objects with the help of AR & VR apps.
You can move and rotate the cube in your hand to see things from different angles. It’s a truly amazing experience!
For today's task you will use the Merge Cube with the Galactic Explorer app to explore our solar system. You will be able to hold and rotate the solar system in their hands while exploring the planets and examining and questioning things like rotation, revolution, planet atmospheres, moons, rings and more. You will work in teams to complete the AR Explorer activity sheets using both the giant and regular Merge cubes. Have fun learning and exploring the 3D augmented reality models!
How To Use the Merge Cube
First, click on the Galactic Explorer app on your iPad.
Next, hold the Merge Cube in front the camera on your iPad. Line up the Merge cube with the image on the iPad screen to scan it.
Within a few seconds an augmented 3D hologram will appear on your screen. You will be able to move and turn the hologram. Tap on each planet to get a closer look.
Tap on the circled i to learn more about your selected planet.
Remember to hold your iPad securely with both hands while viewing the giant Merge Cube or place the iPad on the table and hold with one hand while viewing the regular Merge cubes. Have fun learning and exploring with Holograms and Augmented Reality!!
